'I tried M&S 'magic' jeans that make it seem like you've lost weight' (2024)

While hunting for a new pair of jeans, I headed online to see what brands were getting the most hype. It wasn't long before I stumbled after a pair being sold at Marks and Spencer that shoppers were calling "flattering", "excellent quality" and "amazing".

The jeans getting plenty of attention online were the Magic Shaping High Waisted Skinny Jeans. After scrolling through many five-star reviews, one in particular persuaded me to try the jeans on.

It read: "WOW! These jeans really are amazing, as soon as you put them on, you think 'my I look good'. Every time I wear them people say, 'Have you lost weight?' They do wonders for your self-confidence, highly recommended."

Another wrote: "I've spent decades searching for jeans that fit well but don't cost the earth. Finally I've found them." A third added: "Perfect love them so much. Only jeans I wear now for work."

So I decided to head to my nearest store to check them out and see if they indeed were as good as people were claiming. I opted for the skinny version of the jeans, which vow to "hug the body from hip to ankle".

Besides 'skinny', other fits I could have tried on included 'slim flare' and 'straight leg'. The jeans were priced at £45 - an amount I would only ever spend if I thought the product was really worth it.

On the label, the jeans were called 'The Ivy' and featured a high-waisted fit, bi-stretch fabric for 'support and comfort' and shaping darts to 'lift your silhouette'. There were also hidden pockets on the front, designed to 'hold in your stomach'.

As I am quite short (5ft3) and petite, I headed to the changing rooms with a size six in my hands. It didn't take me long to see why so many people were wowed by the jeans.

Although I had to do a little dance to get them on, once I had them on, I loved them. They felt comfortable, the denim seemed a nice texture and had good stretch.

I turned around to see if it delivered its promise of 'enhancing' my silhouette, and I think it did. The jeans hugged my figure and gave me a flattering shape.

However, I did find the price steep for a pair of jeans. Online, some shoppers shared similar experiences with their purchase, with one writing: "Not true to size which is frustrating. Ordered two pairs good quality but expensive for what they are."

Another said: "I found these to be unsuitable for my shape, and made me look larger than I am in areas. Lovely, soft material though."

Online there are 25 different sizes to choose from, starting from a UK six and finishing at a UK 22. There are either short/petite, regular and long leg lengths to choose from.

But Marks and Spencer isn't the only retailer selling 'shaping' jeans. ASOS is selling Topshop Hourglass Joni jeans in bleach for £36. Or you can get Blue Lift and Shape Emilee Jeggings for £16.99 at New Look. At River Island there's a pair of Blue High Waisted Tummy Hold Flare Jeans for £48.
